  Wisely, the novel opens with a brief history of the Alliance ‘The Centauri Rim crisis quickly escalated following the defeat of Commander Mordecai of the Rising Sun and her band of revolutionaries. Fearing the area would become a haven for more pirates, corsairs, arms smugglers, Separatists, Unionist rebels, and Carthago revolutionaries it was only a matter of time before firm action would be taken. The first three weeks of the Alliance invasion saw significant territorial gains, but few military engagements. Each advance saw the rebels fade into the protection of the Rim, a vast area where an entire civilsation can hide from the gaze of authority. All of that changed the day Knighthawk Squadron made a stunning discovery, one that would change the course of the conflict once and for all.’
  
  And with that background for this continuing series for those who are new to Thomas’ popular novels, the entry into this realm allows appreciation of the fine use of AI, alternate realities and virtual worlds, and parallels to contemporary world events that make this well written novel fascinating. • Star Crusader Tides of War by Michael G. Thomas continues this expansive series for the author. The action starts right away at the beginning of the book with an enemy invasion and wars, both the real and virtual world kind. There is also a parallel universe inhabited by video game players, and political overtones that may pique your interest. There is plenty going on in this story, and you can tell the author enjoys creating vivid scenes while developing realistic characters. A fast pace, solid plot, and skillful writing make this a must read for science fiction fans everywhere. It might be helpful to read the other books in the series to get a feel for the author's intent, but this book certainly holds it's own. Overall a solid entry into the science fiction genre that will appeal to teenagers and adults as well. Highly recommend for a fun and entertaining book.
• This is the latest in a series, Tides of Hope brings us to the Edge of The Rim, which is home to a variety of different alien Lifeforms. Think of the recent movie A City of a thousand planets and you have the idea of the alien diversity within the Rim. The invasion of the Centauri Rim has begun, and the Knighthawks squadron are at the foremost tip of the forces.
  At the beginning of each chapter, the author gives us a background and viewpoint of different historical events that have happened that help set the stage for what is going on in this book. Being the tenth in a series, it had the potential to fall flat and become redundant. The overall arc of the book however, is still going strong within the series and the events were easy to immerse myself within and get lost in the adventure of the story. Fantastic series!
• Star Crusader is a sci-fi thriller about the Centauri Rim and the battles it faces. The Rim is home to many types of misfits and more. There is a stronghold somewhere within the rim that will be the site if the final battle for supreme control. This story falls right in line with the last one in this series and is written in a way that is very easy to follow and there are plenty of reasons to hope your favorite survive. I found this story to be a quick paced action filled journey through fantasy and reality. I think it is just read forneveyone with a desire to explore the sci-fi world where legends are made.
• The author drops you into the middle of story thats pretty obviously (to me anyway) supposed to mirror some of the current events in our current society. The premise that the political thinking of a world is manipulated through a video game to be ultra nationalistic and xenophobic towards alien races which is a thinly veiled comparison to the modern political realities is weak. Its also a shame to see these types of politics blattantly manifested in a set of books I very much enjoyed up to this point. Maybe the author is looking to get picked up by Tor publishing.
• Great addition to the series and the writers universe. Following nate and his friends on an ever expanding journey .Nice twist with the "parallel" gamers universe and impact on the real world, kinda wishing gaming on that level was available today -) Since im not from states i happily dont have an opinoin on the political parallels ;-)
• Great Action as always Heroes from the previous generation join with the heroes of present generation both fighting a war no one saw coming using unique skills, tech, planning, courage & luck.
• Very surprised turn of events in this book. A worthy continuation of an incredible series. I cannot wait for the next chapter

• This was absolutely terrible and not funny and not interesting. Yuck
• This book had me in stitches from page one. It’s a collection of short essays and the content rings true for anyone who has experienced this thing called life. The author is a modern day Erma Bombeck. I learned so many Southern Lady codes that I fear I’m becoming a Southerner - not a bad thing!
• A fun book of amusing essays, many of which I could relate to on multiple levels. Beneath the humor, there’s a sense of a warm, caring woman who knows who she is and what she wants. This is a woman who’d be fun to have as a friend. Easy read.
• I would read a shopping list if Helen Ellis wrote it. I loved this book.
• Everything my momma taught me, explained in the funniest and most honest way possible! You won't be disappointed with this book.
• Fabulous read!
• Helen Ellis makes me laugh out loud. If you can use some of that, you may want to read this book. Thanks go to Doubleday and Net Galley for the review copy.
  
  Southern Lady Code is a title that carries a code of its own. Some people use the word “lady” to describe European royalty; some to describe a courteous woman, which is what I anticipated here; and some use it to describe a well-mannered woman with a very comfortable income, which appears to be the author’s operating definition. In terms of the “code,” I thought I’d be reading straight satire, but discovered that she has provided a combination of self-help tips and searing, sometimes raucous humor. It works surprisingly well.
  
  I have never made a cheese log before or wanted one, but Ellis’s recipe sounds so persuasively delicious that I may try it. That said, my favorite essays were short on advice and long on humor. I nearly hurt myself laughing over the construction man she found masturbating in her bedroom—did I mention that she gets a little edgy here? And “The Ghost Experience” is massively entertaining. There’s a lot of good material. Though at times her outlook is a little more conservative than my own, I like the things she says in support of gay and trans friends.
  
  Ultimately, I suspect that I am not the target audience for Ellis, who in her middle-aged years is dispensing life skills wrapped in bountiful amounts of humorous anecdotes. She is writing to her peers and to those women younger than herself. I am ten or twenty years older than this woman, but I still came away impressed. So, ladies and women, if you can look past the assumption of a greater-than-average income, you’ll have a good time here, and if you can’t, try to get this collection at the library and read selectively, because more of these essays will resonate than not, for all of us.
  
  I rate this book four giggles, and it will be available to the public tomorrow, April 16, 2019.
• If I've said it once, I've said it a million times - any book that can make me laugh out loud immediately wins its place on my metaphorical shelf of books worth reading.
  
  Southern Lady Code is a short, snappy book full of hilarious essays by Helen Ellis about her life as a woman who grew up in the South. Interestingly enough, I'm not sure I would call this a "southern" work in the way that books by Joshilyn Jackson or William Faulkner are absolutely steeped in southern culture and setting. Ellis has spent a large part of her adult life in New York, and a lot of the stories are very "upper crust NYC" in their sensibilities. The title comes into play as she examines all of the different experiences she has in her life through the lens of this "code" that she learned from growing up in the south. The code is in her own words - "a technique by which, if you don't have something nice to say, you say something not-so-nice in a nice way." As someone who has spent her whole life in the South, I can confirm that almost everything she says is true - it is (unfortunately) not some over-exaggeration of the characteristics of a "southern lady."
  
  Despite this, I don't think that someone would need to be from the south to enjoy this collection - I think it has something to appeal to all women, as it's really about life as a modern American woman. She holds absolutely nothing back, and shares anecdotes that will have you barking with laughter.

• In this memoir, Mira Jacob explores her life and her awakening to the realities of being a person of color in the United States, alternating with her attempts to guide her mixed-race young son amid those same realities. The format is a series of several dozen conversations (“talks”), presented as comix with paperdoll-like characters over evocative photographic backgrounds of the relevant setting (various homes, big-city streets, outdoors).
  
  I laughed out loud, I teared up. I felt turn-the-page suspense, discouragement, and the slightest hint of optimism. The book is readable in one sitting, but it’s not light material as Jacob develops the issues and powerfully immerses the reader in her experience. GOOD TALK is a very good book, and it’s an important book.

  I laughed, I cried, I was in ‘aw’ with Mira’s son, Z. I fell deep in love with Mira - her family - and Mira’s ruthless passion.
  WE REALLY GET the pain & hurt she has lived with her ENTIRE LIFE... WE GET THE MESSAGE....SOO deeply - I still have tears in my eyes as I type.
  
  I was incredibly impressed with the styling- crafting - of BOTH THE BOOK ( written words Mira wrote), and the brilliant creativeness in the audiobook. There were added sounds that were outstanding and powerful. Why has nobody else thought of this yet? Mira may have started a trend in adding more creativity audiobooks.
  
  This book is so gut wrenching RAW- and REAL. I listen from start to finish without stopping. It’s only 2 hours long....

  I read Mira Jacob’s first book, “The Sleepwalker’s Guide To Dancing”, years ago. I later met her at a book festival in Austin. We had a great conversation. I liked Mira’s first book - remember much of it well.....
  But in this book, she out does herself. REALLY A POWERFUL PUNCH!!!

  It’s been a long time since I was THIS jazzed about THE AUDIOBOOK ‘itself’.
  Two other audiobooks gave me the chills - Goosebumps- as in SO FRICKEN FRESH - in delivery and dialogue. “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”, by Sherman Alexie moved me BIG TIME.....
  AND NOW......
  “GOOD TALK”..... moved me BIG TIME! It will move you!!!!!!

• The headline is that I loved this book. It's creative, well-plotted and drawn, funny, and deals with meaningful subjects in creative and witty ways. Looking for a good primer on "soft racism" and issues around love, race, and gender? Get ready for a "Good Talk."
  
  Sure, a lot of the subject matter in "Good Talk" is hard to deal with in real life racism, terrorism, family dynamics, just to name a few. And solutions may be hard to impossible, awkward and uncomfortable. But Jacob's book makes it clear that, while the topics may be hard, starting to talk about them is important, and is a task that should be started early and revisited often. Her humor, directed in equal parts at the world and at herself, makes this discussion of universal experiences at the same time a very personal narrative.
• It touches on racism, colorism, interracial relationships, immigration and so much more - all while being funny, thought-provoking, and wonderfully vulnerable and courageous. I got my copy on a Monday, and since then read it immediately, put it on my coffee table where I intended for it to live, and 3 days later ended up giving it away to a friend, and ordered another copy for myself, and it arrived on Saturday -- and I'm reading it again, and will probably give it away again, and buy another. It’s that good.
• Such an amazing, wonderful book + the hard cover is looks (and feels) so nice!
  It's an easy read (I read it in one swoop on a weekend) and catches today's Zeitgeist in an incredible fashion. Be prepared for it to make you both feel warm and for it to make you cry - it will touch your soul in a very tender place.
  I can tell that I will be keeping this book around and giving it to my kids to read someday.
• Loved this and am recommending it to my friends/family. Her humor breaks up the heaviness of the topic. She covers a lot of ground in this book, including colorism, bigotry of people of color toward other groups of people of color, and racism. It hit very, very close to home for my husband and I.
• Mira Jacob's gift is that she can make a reader move from laughter to heartache in the space of two sentences. In this incredible work, she augments this gift with the power of illustration, cleverly making difficult topics easier to grasp and digest. Poignant, important, essential-- buy it for the people you need to have a tough conversation with.
• What Mrs. Jacob does in this book is open her life, struggles and dreams to any who care to read it (you should). The juxtaposition of the heavy topics with the graphic novel style format sometimes softens the uncomfortable topics and other times brings them into sharp focus. The openness with which Mrs. Jacob discusses herself and family is daunting and very much appreciated. If you want to understand what it is like to not feel accepted in two communities because of superficialities this book exposes that.
  
  It's a fantastic read ...

• It has been so great to hear Alyssa Mastrommonaco on all of my favorite podcasts this week, and even better to see the package with this book in my mailbox yesterday!
  
  Just read the first few chapters (essays?) and they were great. Funny, interesting, and reads like a conversation with your super cool friend.
  
  I'll update when I'm done, but I wanted to get a review in so that people will see that they need to 1) add to cart and 2) proceed to checkout. Now!
• A fun read. Love the essay format and lists. Alyssa is a best friend in my head. Looking forward to her next book.

• Even at 60 years old, I loved every page. Their stories resonated deeply with me taking me on a trip down memory lane. I will happily listen to Alyssa's stories about IBS and can even contribute a few of my own. The book made me want to be besties with Alyssa and Lauren. There is some very good guidance on these pages and I wish I had this book at 22. Buy and read the book, you will be glad.

• I loved the voice and tone of this book, and the stories shared with humor and big-sisterly advice. Not taking herself too seriously but having healthy self-dignity and confidence, Alyssa Mastromonoco gives insight to her Obama years and also all the twists and turns that brought her to that opportunity. Reading this felt like chatting with a best friend. Absolutely loved this - started and finished it on a 3 hour flight!
